There is no single day I could save at least 500 per month, but now it is possible

Women for Women Rwanda in its 12-months signature program that provides economically and socially marginalized women in Rwanda with the skills and resources needed to transform their lives socio-economically; continues to train women in kayonza.

In the core program, most of the women enrolled in the program (60%) are illiterate and their capacity of counting, read, and using numbers are very low.

One of the objectives of the program is to empower them economically through practicing income-generating activities. Exercising these activities requires business skills and it is very hard to apply them without knowing how to read and count.

To respond to this challenge, the Women for women Rwanda program has included in its package for new women enrolled the training for 3 months of Numeracy literacy where women are trained in the following topics:

  • Problems solving: Addition, subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. This training helped women to open their mind vis a vis to business management
  • Calculator use: This helps women involved in business to count with minimum errors
  • Key business terms: This helps participants to be familiar with terms used in business in their daily life
  • Record keeping: This helps participants to be familiar with calculations in their small businesses, hence, knowing whether they are making a profit or loss

All these skills help the women open their minds and be prepared to acquire business skills that help them start small businesses and use the loans taken from VSLA to change their livelihood conditions. Numeracy /Literacy training is the 1st package given to women enrolled in the program.

Another participant from Kayonza in VSLA and Literacy thanked Women for Women Rwanda for enrolling her.

Uwamariya Devotha is 30 years old, a mother of two, and is legally married. A resident of Mukarange sector, Kayonza Cell, Kabungo Village. She only completed primary, and the life she lives today is hard because she doesn’t have a firm to grow different crops; the only source of money is her husband or casual work like cultivating so that they can fulfill the family’s basic needs. She is thanking WfW-Rwanda to enroll her in Mukarange, she is hoping to see her life-changing soon. “I have worked for others casually for a long time, I use to gain 2000 FRW per day, and sometimes get little money from my husband to buy different items needed at home. There is no single day I could save at least 500 per month, but now it is possible. Thank you, WfW-Rwanda, for enrolling me in your program”. Said Uwamariya.

She started the training with low commitment but now she can’t miss a single day. She is now saving on her stipend

She requested a loan in her VSLA group and bought the 5 rabbits in August 2022. She is planning to buy the sewing machine at the end of vocational training so that she can work autonomously for her family
