41 Women Complete Training Program, Ready to Transform Lives in their communities
41 women and girls from the Ndera sector, Gasabo district, have successfully completed a 12-month signature program in socio-economic training, specializing in shoemaking and hairdressing. They express their newfound creativity and confidence, positioning themselves for success in the competitive market of Rwanda. After investing a year in training, these women are determined to utilize their acquired skills to uplift themselves from poverty.
During their testimonies, the women emphasized the importance of women and girls being at the forefront of sustainable development efforts in Rwanda and the world. They believe that by finding sustainable solutions to their own challenges and those faced by their families, they can contribute significantly to the development of their communities and the nation as a whole.
Dominique Uwimana, a widow within the group, shared her transformational journey, stating that before joining the program, she couldn't envision her own development. However, she now firmly believes that she can contribute to the progress of her family and the country. She says, "I was once extremely impoverished, struggling to provide for my family's basic needs. I couldn't even afford shoes and had to walk barefoot. But since joining the program, my life has changed. I now wear shoes that I make myself, and I even sell some to support my family."
Sifa Byukusenge, a young mother within the group, expressed the hardships she faced after giving birth, unable to afford basic items like body lotion or shoes, feeling lonely and desperate. She states, "Life was unbearable after giving birth. I felt silenced, not only within my family but also in the community. However, thanks to Women for Women, who provided us with training, certificates, and investment funds, I can now save. I am grateful for this opportunity and will do my best to build a prosperous and healthy life for myself and my family."
Sifa sees this as a tremendous opportunity to escape poverty and intends to use her acquired skills to establish her own shoe brand.
Fabien Nkusi, the executive secretary of the Ndera sector, believes that the transformation of these women will positively impact the community. By starting businesses related to their respective training, these women will not only benefit themselves and their families but also serve as a catalyst for change among other women. Mr. Nkusi expresses his gratitude for the program's focus on women's development, particularly vulnerable women. He urges these women to set goals that will have a lasting impact on both themselves and the entire community.
Mr. Nkusi further emphasizes that these trained women will play a significant role in transforming the image of the Ndera sector, contributing to lucrative activities that will alleviate poverty levels within their communities.
It's great news to hear that 41 young girls and women have successfully completed the WfW-Rwanda 12 months signature socio-economic program, which started in June 2022 and ended on 31st May 2023. The program has provided them with valuable skills in hairdressing and leather making, which they can use to start their small businesses and generate income.
The program's impact goes beyond just skill acquisition and income generation. It has also helped the participants to live healthier lives, free of gender-based violence (GBV). This is a significant achievement, as GBV is a pervasive issue that affects many women globally. By providing a safe and supportive environment, the program has empowered the participants to take control of their lives and contribute to household decision-making.
Overall, the WfW-Rwanda program has been an excellent initiative to empower young girls and women with valuable skills and knowledge. It's encouraging to see how such programs can make a positive impact on individuals and communities, and we hope to see more of such initiatives in the future.
