A new chapter in empowering young Rwandan adolescent girls has opened with the launch of the "Abadacogora" Adolescent Girl pilot program. The event, held on October 10th, brought together Women for Women International staff, local leadership, parents, community members, and partners to celebrate the commencement of a 10-month program designed to equip 75 girls aged 16 and 17 with essential life skills, knowledge, and support for a brighter future.
The launch event kicked off with a vibrant introductory traditional dance, setting the tone for a day filled with hope and enthusiasm. The Executive Secretary of Rubona Sector Mrs. MUKASHYAKA Chantal extended a warm welcome and expressed deep appreciation for the work of Women for Women Rwanda. This program, she noted, is a testimony to the organization's commitment to uplift the lives of young girls in the region.
The "Abadacogora" program represents a significant step forward in addressing the unique needs and interests of young girls. It offers a comprehensive approach, incorporating foundational training on rights, health and wellbeing, decision-making, and conflict resolution. In addition, it provides vocational skills-building, financial support, connections to peer support networks, and essential referral services.
The two-year journey involved the creation of safeguarding mechanisms to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the program. The Strong Women Strong Nation curriculum was adapted to better cater to the needs of adolescent girls. An Adolescent girl policy was established, emphasizing a commitment to safeguarding.
The program launch followed an introduction session held on October 3rd, where program objectives, expectations, and outcomes were discussed with parents and caregivers. Formal consent was obtained, ensuring the support of the girls' families.
In a heartfelt address, our Executive Director, Berna Rusagara expressed deep gratitude to the esteemed guests and dedicated members gathered for the launch of a transformative journey. She highlighted that the organization's enduring partnership with the Rwandan government in addressing women's well-being, education, economic empowerment, reproductive health, and rights has been commendable.
The focus extends beyond adult women, encompassing the challenges faced by young girls, including limited access to quality education and the hindrances posed by early marriages and teenage pregnancies. With a ten-month program tailored for 75 girls aged 16 and 17, the mission is clear: to nurture their personal growth and economic well-being, guiding them toward realizing their aspirations and contributing to their nation's progress.
She ended with the appeal for dignified support from distinguished guests and unwavering dedication from parents and guardians marking the beginning of a promising initiative, with the leadership of Rwamagana District and Rubona Sector receiving well-deserved recognition for their collaboration and hosting of this event.
During the event, one of the young adolescent girls, Uwimana Claudine expressed her happiness about the program. She acknowledged the risks that adolescent girls who used to attend school face such as involvement in illicit drugs and early pregnancy, and she emphasized the importance of respecting children's rights. She concluded by thanking our Executive Director for making the program a reality.
"I used to attend school determined, but hunger forced me to drop out. Now, with this chance, I will study hard to succeed.” She said
The event saw the participation of the representative of Rwamagana District, Alias Nkunzimana in charge of education who pledged to continue supporting and collaborating with Women for Women Rwanda. He highlighted the critical role that programs like "Abadacogora" play in the overall well-being of the community.
The "Abadacogora" Adolescent Girl pilot program is more than just an educational initiative; it is a beacon of hope, a promise of transformation, and a testament to the power of community support. With this program, adolescent girls in Rwamagana are poised to become strong, empowered individuals who can make informed decisions, pursue their dreams, and contribute to the growth and development of their society.”
