An Empowering Journey: How Abanyamurava Maize Farming Cooperative Transformed Challenges into Triumphs

In the heart of Kayonza District, the women-led Abanyamurava Maize Farming Cooperative has redefined what is possible for rural women entrepreneurs.

Through resilience, strategic partnerships, and the power of knowledge, this cooperative of 57 determined women has not only transformed their livelihoods but also positioned themselves as key players in the agricultural sector.

Turning Point: The Power of Partnership and Training

This provided members with targeted training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), financial literacy, and public speaking—equipping them with both technical and leadership skills.

Odette Mukarusanga, the cooperative’s chairperson, reflects on this transformation: “Before, we simply saw ourselves as farmers. Today, we proudly identify as businesswomen. The training shifted our mindset and gave us the confidence to scale our operations.”

From Knowledge to Impact: Boosting Productivity and Income

Armed with new skills, the cooperative adopted advanced maize production techniques and strategic intercropping with carrots to maximize both land use and profits. This season, they cultivated eight hectares of maize, projecting earnings of up to 12 million Rwandan Francs from their upcoming March 2025 harvest.

But their success goes beyond increased yields. By applying their newly acquired pitching and advocacy skills, Abanyamurava successfully secured vital support from the Ministry of Agriculture. This led to the construction of a Maize drying shelter worth 10 million Rwandan Francs—a milestone that significantly strengthened their post-harvest management. The drying shelter has reduced aflatoxin contamination, enhanced maize quality, and positioned itself as a reliable supplier in the market.

Beyond Farming: Expanding into Agro-Entrepreneurship

With their confidence and capacity strengthened, the cooperative is now setting its sights on the next frontier—agro-entrepreneurship. They aim to establish an agro-dealership business, supplying seeds, fertilizers, and other farming inputs to local farmers. This expansion will diversify their income and create ripple effects by improving access to quality agricultural resources for the wider community.

A Vision Realized, A Future Redefined

Reflecting on their remarkable progress, Odette shares: “Our growth would not have been possible without the support of Women for Women Rwanda and the Julius Baer Foundation. Their investment in us has turned our vision into reality, and now, we are ready to empower others.”

From small-scale farmers to agricultural entrepreneurs, Abanyamurava’s journey is a testament to the power of training, strategic partnerships, and unwavering determination. Their story is not just about farming—it is about women daring to dream, breaking barriers, and building a future where they lead and thrive.
